My 5spd gets close to 20 in the city with a light foot.
On another note, MPG ratings are usually far off from true mileage. I
read an article somehwere about owners of some of the hybrids getting
less than 20 miles per gallon in the city. The way city fuel economy is
measured is by taking a specific route in LA back in 1965. That 35 miles
per gallon is probably closer to the high 20's. My jetta TDI that was
supposed to get 45 MPG never saw anything above 40, city or highway.

I get +/-15 in the city and +/-21 with mainly highway. I've seen 26 on the
highway... and 12 in the city... ugh. Still, it's not like driving a
suburban or hummer or something ;)
on the hybrid side, we have 4 Toyota Prius and 5 Honda Civic hybrids in the
fleet at work. NONE of the Civics has averaged under 35mpg in the city and
the Prius' average has been in the 50mpg range - with virtually all of their
driving in short distance city modes. i know that these numbers do drop on
highway use, but they're still staying VERY high. The fleet manager is pushing
HARD to replace all of the cars in the fleet with hybrids... and since we
saw the first $3.00+/gal signs today, I bet he'll get his way.
