[V8] PRND321 Display problem

Now to my patient, 1990 V8 Automatic:  As the car runs over an extended period (over 10 minutes), the Shift display flickers and drops down a gear -- the actual tranny does not downshift to that gear, thank goodness.  Only thing I have noticed is that when this happens and it alternates between Drive and 3, when in Drive and I floor the accelerator, she'll downshift -- not so in 3.  Have not pulled any codes yet.  Also, when the indicator drops down a gear and I move the trans selector to neutral, Drive is indicated, and when I drop down to 3, 2nd is indicated.  Sometimes the display often flickers more and may drop down to 2nd, 1st, whole display off/on, with no actual gear change taking place.
