[V8] whiney rear

Fellow v8ers,
I've been lurking for a few months after purchasing my 2nd v8 -- 1990
auto w/ 114k+ miles -- after totalling my daily driver (a Citroen CX!)
This is my 2nd v8, having previously owned a '91 auto which I got
frightened out of looking at $5k+ repairs. After totalling the CX I
needed to find something relatively cheap -- at least at 1st (since I
got $0 insurance from the total loss) -- and solid. No car I've driven
gives me a safer feeling than the v8, and am enjoying this bout of
ownership and have already taken care of some essential work.
A good month or so ago I started to notice a noise - almost like a
slipping belt, but calling it a whine for lack of better term - that I
finally identified as coming from the rear. Manifests itself when
starting from stop/near stop under acceleration, and stops when you hit
about 30mph or so. Just revving the engine does not produce it, so I'm
thinking transmission or differential? Any insights most appreciated.
Also any suggestions for a good garage in the Portland, OR area most
welcome (I do know of SJM for parts) -- so far I've serviced this where
I took my previous v8 and type 44 100Q, but there workmanship seems to
have downhill. Many thanks and no doubt I'll be back for more!
