Anyone out there have experience replacing the hydraulic pump?
I think that I've had an 'on and off' problem for several months now. However, it started leaking fairly heavily this past week on a road trip. I was losing it at the rate of a quart every 30-40 miles. The instrument panel brake light stayed lit as well. Couldn't tell if there was any less braking power or increased steering effort, however.
The leak's origin(s) remains a bit of a mystery to me. At first upon cursory inspection it appeared to be coming from somewhere just to the right of the banjo bolt feeding the high pressure line to the bomb. There was a tiny yet forceful stream of the green fluid shooting out from that area.
The car was parked for a few days. Cleaned up the area to have a better look and restarted it. Almost immediately there was a leak. It was dripping at the rate of about two drops/second on to the ground. But, there was now no leakage anywhere from the top half of the pump as viewed from above. Best as I can tell the leak was coming from the anterior end of the pump. I suspect that it's a front seal on the pump but I've never had one out to have had a look at it.
Never mind. The hoses look fine and the seals appeared to be intact on the banjo bolts upon disassembly. The pump needs to be changed. Car has 160 000 miles on it.
It couldn't find the pages in the manual outlining how one removes the pump. I started by removing the banjo bolts and the lines no problem. I then removed the accessory belt. I decided to stop there to find out how do to do this job from someone who has had experience. I want to do it the easiest way possible...there's not too much room to move around.
Do I have to remove the pulley before I can pull it out?
Do I have to remove the AC compressor?
What about the bracket? There are two higher bolts with large allen heads that form part of the mounting bracket. What is to be done, if anything with them?
Any advice on how to do this job as painlessly as possible would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Gunter
