The 8-6-4 "displacement on demand" was an even bigger POS than the diesel
(no one thought that possible at the time.) The GM passenger car
"diesels" were problematic because they weren't built as diesels, but ill
conceived "modified" gas engines.
I still remember the tallest free standing object west of Boston used to
be the pile of 8-6-4 engines at the long gone Castle Metal yard in South
Boston. Cadillac ended up replacing them all under warranty with normal
engines, which ironically make the 8-6-4 rare collectibles.
