That's the most likely culprit.  Have you tried blinking the trouble codes?  Very easy to do, go to www.sjmautotechnik.com and search for V8 ECU and follow the steps.  Of course you guys may have a VAG 1551 / 1552 (or emulator) tool at your shop that will pull the codes just as easy.

thanks for that...might be tough to diagnose till it happens, but should be able to get it sorted
if thats the problem...basically this is a crank sensor then..makes sense
