Oh, Yes!  The red plastic cover slipped off the battery
on my '94 100 S Avant.  Fortunately I smelled smoke in
time and only have some charred foam on the seat bottom.
A heavy piece of plastic taped over the positive post
should protect it.  As for the vents, the newer gel-cell
batteries don't need venting.

If the V8 is like my '89 200, it could be the vacuum
pump located under the back seat.
