[V8] Dodged a major bullet

Not sure if this could apply here or not, but a little trick I learned from
a friend who's been wrenching longer than I've been driving might help.
He told me to use this trick on my rear main seal on my jeep's engine when I
rebuilt it (a common leak point on older jeeps.) Basically the trick is
this, you get a bar or good old fashioned soap (not dove or fancy
moisturizing bars, but the old fashioned stuff, I used dial) and as you
install the seal, you rub the wetted soap bar on the outside of the seal,
being careful not to get it on the oil facing side.
20,000 miles after my rebuild, I still have no sign of leaking oil at the
rear main. I'm pretty sure this solution won't last forever, but it's
worked well so far.

Just an FYI - the manual says to put some sealer on the cam end bearing
blocks
(all 4 of them) - there is no gasket but there is a small channel for
silicone
type sealer.
I an not exactly sure what gasket Dave is refering to here - I remember a
large
o-ring behind the mounting flange - I supose you could seal that, but a new
o-ring is pretty cheap and would not require sealer.
All in all, there are roughly 10346 places oil can leak around the
distributors
and the cam sprockets. You need to go in pretty deep to fix them all up.
