I didn't know there was a dye you could add to the AC system - but why bother
when there are tools available to detect freon directly?
Any good AC shop should have one of these. HVAC sellers/instalers also often
carry them. I would guess this tool is too expensive to buy for personal use.

If your system is already empty, you may as well replace all the sealing gaskets
and o-rings and maybe think about the R134 conversion.
