[V8] new V8 owner; first set of questions.

Welcome Chris,

Can't say I've had the combination of symptoms that you indicate, but I 
can offer the following.

 From the fault table in the manual:

    * Was the idle speed steady at about 700 rpm?  I can't find those
      VAG-COM numerical values in my manual, but did see the phrase
      "Minimum adaptation limit not obtained" associated with the ISV or
      MAF sensor.  No association of ISV with power loss though.
    * Looking at other symptoms;  high fuel consumption, plug fouling,
      and power loss are associated with things like knock sensor, hall
      sensor, MAF sensor, O2 sensor, fuel pressure over 58psi,


Personal experience:

    * When my mpg dropped from 20 average to about 12, it was the O2
      sensor, although it mostly ran ok with only light power loss. 
      Almost simultaneously, the engine had also developed a very slight
      hesitation on throttle tip-in just off idle, caused by an open
      vacuum line.
    *  From the archives I could see that the fuel pressure regulator is
      a known offender.  I'd heard that a bad FPR could cause
      hydrostatic lock followed by bent rods, so I just put a new one in
      when I first got the car.
    * I initially had leakage and a light burnt oil smell from the
      driver side.  It turned out to be 3 or 4 loose screws on the head
      cover.  The car had just received a timing belt service before I
      bought it (1-2K miles previously), so the cover gasket was still
      like new.
