Agree with Kneale, check the power steering fluid and fill with Pentosin
fluid only. Since you're having a lot of problems with the hydraulic
system, (loss of power steering, loss of brake, brake warning light, etc).
I would also check the power steering hose(s) from the pump to the rack.
This could also be the cause of the smoke coming from underneath your as
fluid is dripping onto the exhaust pipes.
As for the alternator, use the climate control to see what the voltage is.
Press the outside temperature button and off button at the same time and
then release. Use the + temperture button to move to channel 11, then press
the outside temperature button and the display will show you what volatge is
at the climate control. With the engine running you should see 13.5 or
higher depending on the condition of the battery. Select any other button
(ECON, DEfrost, Auto) will return the display to normal operation. A
volatge regulator and brushes is fairly inexpensive. You should be able to
replace it without having to remove the alternator.
