I am just a "shade tree" mechanic and I removed mine in about 3 hours and
reinstalled in 3-4 hours. I also spent another couple of hours cleaning and
flushing the hoses and pentosin reservoir. I boxed up the rack and UPS'd it
to Jorgen Automotive. Cost was $275 plus $10 for UPS.

Subject: [V8] Steering Rack R&R Estimate
Hi everyone,
I'm examining the possibility of replacing the steering rack on my '90
V8Q myself versus having a shop do it. The shop that I took it to
quoted me a price of around $1650 for the job.
I don't see how this is possible. At all. Unless they're estimating 20
hours for the job or something.
I've read that the book quotes 5.5 hours, but have heard that the job
can take as long as 8 hours.
My question is -- is this the number of hours for both extraction and
reinstallation (together), or does this mean that it could take up to 8
hours for removal and up to 8 hours for reinstallation?
This would greatly influence my decision, given that shop rates are
around $65 an hour or so locally. I'm sure that there are less
expensive shops -- but I'm pricing on a 'worst-case' basis.
Please advise.
Thanks,
Nathan
