News! Eric called the Chevy/Cadillac dealer in his area and was told GM no longer supplies the oft mentioned intake system treatment ...............but would he like to buy some of the Ford stuff! He did, foamed the cr*p out of the cylinders and the intake tract, cranked it a bunch, installed the plugs, and .............FIRED IT UP! Great advice, all those who recommended it! Made his day, made the customer happy as can be, and made me look like the good guy! Thanks to all who responded. Keep up the good work! John

No compression : Carbon build up in the valve areas......

I cross posted this to the V8 list.
I also read that some of this build-up is affecting newer 1.8T and 2.8 engines due to close tolerances and the lack of routine maintenance while some of these cars are in / just off of lease.
While I can't find the source for this info, consider it ur-Audi legend until I find the print story.

Hi John, assuming we're past the basics of tbelts and fuel washdown, the
only really strange one I've seen was a customers 3.6L that was parked warm
and then wouldn't restart when cooled off the next morning. Towed in,
sounded weak, tested compression and got nearly zip in a couple cylinders on
one bank.(best recollection on my part since this was a couple years ago).
Car had 150k on it or so. We feared the worst, prepped him for a decent
expense, and pulled the heads. No visual damage to be found, just a generous
carbon buildup. The chunks were actually holding the valves open enough to
    kill the compression.
