... excellent point Dave!  Many relatively unrelated "system" issues can
impact the fuel economy and service cost for a vehicle.  I've driven #2
up to Sacramento and back a couple times in the past month ... ~300 mile
round trip.  One thing that I noticed was that the oil temp never made
it up to the minimum peg even at 70MPH on the interstate.  I'm going to
pull part numbers for the thermostat for the oil cooler and try swapping
it out ... while the result would not be as pronounced as for a coolant
thermostat I do expect to pick up a bit on the fuel economy.  

... I too seem to have the issue with the nut that holds the steering
wheel causing lower gas mileage ... when my wife drives the car she
seems to get a lot more miles out of a tank than I do ... ;-)
Fortunately for me, my primary transportation has only two wheels, and
even with my lead right hand I can easily beat the gas mileage of a V8
...
