Funny this thread should appear.
I was wandering around eBay Motors last week and decided to check out the
current crop of VW's. My personal all-time favorites are VW diesels, having
had several Rabbit diesels which were well worn when they came to me, became
more well worn under me, and finally died.
For some months now (Don), I, too have been driving a truck every day. My
choice has been either The Runt, a 1992 Ford F150 Flareside 4X4 at around 13
miles per gallon, or the Chevvy 3500 dually 4X4 extended cab at around 12
miles per gallon. Very soon, my new "daily driver" will be ready. That is
a '91 Audi 20Valve wagon, which will probably deliver around 20 miles per
gallon overall, but of premium fuel.
So I have been wondering about finding a Rabbit of some sort, that will
deliver 30 miles per gallon or so of regular gas, as a summer beater...
Quite a few interesting choices last week, including a pretty nice looking,
relatively low mileage Rabbit convertible in Marschewsets (as they say way
Downeast), that sold for around $1100 in the auction process. About 60,000
miles, too. Up here, Rabbits are pretty good transportation, because we
have little to no freeways at all...nearest Interstate is 30 miles from
here...and most roads are speed limited to not more than 45 to 50 miles per
hour. ANY Rabbit can do very well here, and unless one has the unfortunate
luck to be assaulted by a huge SUV from Marschewsets, the cars are terrific
drivers...drive it until it is too rusty to pass inspection (and if you know
the right inspection guy, that is when the seats no longer stay inside the
car), and you can ride real cheap.
I am really looking forward to having the 20Valve Avant on the road, but if
it works really well, it might just get sold and I might go Rabbit hunting.
Now, if I can only get my Maine Coon Cat, Kathryn to think like a beagle....
Roger
