I'm just not sure if that is possible, just because there is a huge difference between 20 degrees and 70 degrees and what they mean to a car's cooling system.
At any rate, this morning, the outside temp was 45 F, and my system ran at 75 C. This evening, it was about 58 F, and the car ran at about 78-80 C.
To weigh in on putting the thermostat in backwards, you'd have to be very intent on putting it in that way. I tried, unsuccessfully, for an hour. It is made a little too long to go in the wrong way, so it would definitely not seal and therefore leak like crazy.
Mine comes up to operating temp pretty quickly, so I'm fairly sure that the t-stat is working. I put the ball right side up, so unless it fell off (I did have to JB Weld it on), I shouldn't have a problem there.
My coolant is the OEM stuff, though I was running the orange stuff before.

I meant that given the same driving circumstance, say steady 70 mph on a highway, a properly functioning thermostat should keep the engine at the same temperature whether the ambient temperature is, say, 20 degrees F or 70 degrees F.
