... or there can be a problem with the wiring between the sensor and the ECU

... if you had a spare sensor kicking around it might have been worth 
swapping for the heck of it ... but if you're talking about a $$ sensor it 
is always better to try to make sure its not something else fiirst.  If 
you've got ProDiag or VAG-COM you can read the data blocks from the ECU ... 
one of which is the coolant temp ... you can see what the ECU is reading ...
