Guess it's a good thing I wanted to replace the seal. I see there is a
weep hole in the bottom of the casing that holds the seal for oil or
whatever to drain out. Must have been a leak past the seal. I slid the
new seal onto the back of the bearing/shaft assembly and used that to
reinstall the seal.
Now, I pulled the crankshaft seal and replaced it, trying to use the tool I
have for the I5 engines. Didn't realize this required a different tool.
So I ended up installing it the old fashioned way: big socket and a hammer
instead of the tool and crank bolt. Trouble is, I slid the seal deeper
than flush with the outside of the casing. Should I pull out that seal and
get another to replace it, or will it be OK even though it's sunken into
the case about an eighth of an inch?????
