[V8] how to hold sprockets

I just went and looked at my "strap wrench" I screwed one end of the strap
to the bottom of the 2x4, the strap comes up the face of the 2x4 and around
the pulley, back across the bottom of the 2x4 and up the back. Moving the
screws up and down the back allows for the size of the loop to be changed.

My CD version of 15-30-8 states in a box of bold text between the text
Kneale listed:

CAUTION
Tool 3199 Must not be used as holding tool to
loosen camshaft bolt.

I have made a strap wrench for this and other pulleys. It consists of a
length of 2 x 4 with a section of 1" wide nylon tie down strap screwed to
the 2x4 with 3/4" washers. I screwed the one end of the strapping far
enough up the 2x4 so the screws do not contact the pulley. The other end of
the strap wraps over the end and around to the back of the 2x4 and is
screwed down. I adjust the length of the loop from the back for different
size pulleys. Note: the strap is screwed to the 2" edge of the 2x4.

You will be amazed at the holding force that can be applied with such a
simple "poor man's strap wrench"

Jeff

I don't know about the AllData, but the books the factory supplied to Audi
dealerships, collectively called "Repair Manual, V8 Quattro" says on page
15-30-8 "For each cam, fit locating flange 3199.......Secure flange 3199
tightly with distributor mounting bolts.....loosen mounting bolts for
camshaft sprokets....." This is in the description of removing the timing
belt.
