that's what I thought too that the flat rings should seal the area
anyway.
The distributors are mounted on a "flange" and if you remove it one can
find a blue flat ring.
I was told that's a main source for leaks.I plan on replacing them after
I finish the timing belt job.
The one I already replaced is called the cam cap seal and is found only
on one side next to the distributor (passenger side ) .
It's held by 2 torx  (T30) and a 10 mm nut. I did not find any sealant
on it and the area being in contact with oil I thought of no harm in 
this ring having oil on it.
