[V8] 5000tq gearbox in a V8Q?

... I know ... old news ... just getting back to a couple of topics I
haven't had time to respond to ...
I can't speak to what you'd need in terms of prop-shaft and half-shafts
... but as long as you resolve not to try to lock the center diff there
isn't anything stopping someone from having different FDRs in the front
and rear diffs ... I inadvertently learned this when I bought an '87
5kCSQ from a "top Audi mechanic" ... don't get me started on that one
though ...
It is interesting to have the 4.11:1 gears up front and the stock 5000TQ
rear ... what is it, 3.89:1? ... while it seemed counterintuitive to me
the car was more tail happy in the wet than I saw on other 5kTQs ...
Anyways ... it is possible to get 4.11:1 FDR up front by getting a
non-turbo transaxle. This would get you away from a center Torsen and
any associated "spider bite" concerns ... as long as you got the drive
shafts worked out.
I think there are details on the conversion on the AudiConnection site:
http://www.audiconnection.com/5-speed_conversion.htm
I have not followed through with a conversion, but I've gone far enough
down the road on a similar project to know some of the bigger details
... mainly relating to the different shapes of the floor/underbody
between manual and automatic variants ... an AT has a larger girth as
compared to a MT ... and the factory accommodates this difference by
making the area available for the driver foot controls smaller. In
other words, don't expect to simply bolt in the three pedal cluster from
a MT car. The shifter for an AT and MT are significantly different as
well ... as the writer of the AC article above indicates ... the
conversion is not for the feint of heart ...
