[V8] Unintended acceleration... not nice!

Just had a very interesting moment in my V8.
I recently found the cruise wire at the brake pedal was disconnected. Cool.
Reconnect, and I have cruise control. Most simple fix so far. But only for a
few days; it switches itself off on the freeway, and I put that on my mental
to-fix list. This morning I nail it on a 40mph three-lane road with heavy
traffic and (you guessed it) the throttle was stuck open. I had this happen
once in a new Rover 75, so knew straight away the sensation of the car wanting
to hit V-max without my permission, so after my inital two stabs at the brakes
I knew I had to bail out. Hit neutral, had the poor V8 hitting the limiter for
a few seconds so I could have power to turn a corner and off the road. Shut it
down.
I knew exactly where to look thanks to this board. The cruise rod was jammed,
with the bush that's supposed to hold it fragmented.
Now, I bought a new bush and was going to replace it a few months ago, thinking
then maybe that's why the cruise didn't work. I didn't replace it, as the
original looked ok. So my advice is, if you don't know how old the cruise
bushing is, replace it anyway or lose the rod altogether as some here have
done. I don't know what I would've done if a car pulled out in front of me when
that all happened...
