Cobram,
Mine has a build date of 9/89 and also takes a full 10 quarts to show as
full on the dipstick. I've always put 10 quarts in on each oil change and
also have seen no ill effects...frankly I could never walk away after
putting in 8.5 quarts because it just seemed to weird to me to do an oil
change and not have it show as full on the dipstick!

It's been a while, here it is again:
****
Subject: Engine-Revised Engine Oil Capacity
Revised Procedure Group 17, Number 90-01
When servicing Audi V8 models it should be noted that the correct amount
of engine oil should be added when changing the engine oil and oil
filter. The factory has changed the recommended engine oil capacity.
The correct amount during an oil change (with oil filter) is now 8.5
quarts (8.0 liters) of motor oil v/s the previously recommended 10.0
quarts, (9.5 liters).
The new recommended procedure is to fill the crankcase with 8.5 quarts
(8.0 liters) engine oil, start the engine and bring to normal operating
temperatures. Then turn off the engine and check the oil level with the
dipstick. Add oil if necessary.
Note: Corrections to the applicable repair manuals, and owners manuals
will be forthcoming.
****
On this note, V8Q #1 has a build date of 05/89 and takes about 10qts to
get a full dipstick. After 10+ yrs. of +/- 10 qt oil changes on V8Q #1,
if something
was going to happen it I suspect it would have by now.

There are two types of tragedies in life. One is not getting what you
want, the other is getting it.
