[V8] fuel tank... *sigh* does it ever end?

You might have to define "un-repairable".
There are people/places out there who can repair just about anything. Look for
shops that specialize in restoring old cars. Often they have no choice but to
make the original part work. It may cost you - or it may be cheaper. It just
depends on what they do, but it is fairly common to line old tanks with some
sort of polymer. An upside of this method is that you could think about ethanol
fuel blends.
