[V8] Gasoline

I went to mid-grade, then regular gas quite a while ago and really don't see any
power difference for in-town driving. As for mileage, if anything mine went up.
I am currently getting 17 MPG with most of my driving under 45 MPH. On my way to
work, there is an often deserted section of hi-way where I can easily hit 110
MPH in 5th gear. Acceleration is fine. Premium would be better of course, but I
don't see any ill effects from the "cheap" stuff.
I even run the 10% ethanol sometimes - and have since I got the car. Never
noticed any problems there either. E85 is a different story though. I doubt the
V8 would even run on it. It requires special sensors and tuning requirements are
not at all like gasoline.
I do get carbon buildup - hence the frequent trips to 110 land, but I attribute
that mostly to the oil usage. I use about 1qt per 700 miles, and have ever since
I got the car. I replaced valve seals a year or two ago and that helped for a
while, but it has come back again which tells me the guides are toast.
This was by dilemma from a few posts ago. Should I do a head job and maybe even
replace the rings or try to find a motor that would get me to at least 20MPG
in-town mileage at the expense of all the fun that comes with a V8?
Don't laugh, but I have considered the 1.8L TDI or a V6 TDI if I could find one.
