Agreed with Steve, here.  I would point out, though, that later cars
(especially 92+ have an additional trans radiator that looks like the size
of a turbo 1.8 intercooler with temperature -actuated fan, so you're right
in thinking later Automatics.  Bruce at GermanAutoConnectionn would be my
choice as opposed to a dealer as well.  Unless you really have an affinity
for the Audi V8 and know them well with the possible "Gotcha" issues, stick
with a place like AudiConnection, er GermanAutoConnection.
