[V8] So, why the brakes went "boom"

  We like the cars, the cars that go boom.  Or, in my case, screech screech screech boom.
   
  So, the noise was in fact the backing plate dislodging and re-lodging itself at a new angle.  This created much friction, noise, and melting backing plate.  

Nice, that.
