[V8] Hint of Fuel Smell

A common problem on older Audis is that the steel
fuel line corrodes under the clamps holding the line
to the body.  Water (and salt in the snow belt) gets
under the rubber bushing and rusts it away.  Starts
as a pinhole, then grows. That's where I'd start my
search.

If that's the problem, people have reported success
with cutting out the bat area(s) and splicing in fuel
injection quality rubber fuel line hose, usually
double clamped to the old metal line.
