[V8] VAG-COM buy ?

I've never run VAG-COM, but I must say I heartily recommend the ProDiag product.  My prime rationale for preferring the PDA-based solution is that I can keep it with me nearly always.  I've got the PDA in my pocket right now ... I just need to make sure the cables are nearby.  The other week I attached it to my car and took it for a test drive in logging mode.  When I got home I downloaded the file and read it into an Excel spreadsheet and graphed out the parameters.  Lately I've helped a couple different Audi owners at work ... resetting oil change indicators and reading out airbag ECU codes.  I think the cost is pretty much the same for the full package.  I've got to believe I get more value out of the PDA than I would have with the PC solution.  

I posted notes on how to connect an OBD-II connector into a V8 in the audifans KB ... this will save the cost of the adapter you would need otherwise (U$50+).  I'm pretty sure that VAG-COM would benefit from this as well, all you need to do is to obtain an OBD-II connector from a salvage yard.  Actually, if you want to be able to access the instrument cluster and ABS brain (and auto tranny for those who have them) you probably need the adapter ... 

Keep in mind that the V8 is one of the first cars with the fancy built in diagnostics capability, so they aren't as comprehensive as newer cars.  The ECU logs only 10 parameters.  

Of course the biggest reason I recommend ProDiag is that Shade Tree Software is a company which was created by a long time audifan member.  If you do want to get it you can order through sjmautotechnik and support two audifans members in one fell swoop!
