not to get to far off subject, but the concept viper of the early 90's was
HORRID. Yeah, the production car that followed was no more appealing to me,
but the final design sure was a step up from the concept. That is one car
IMO that got MUCH, MUCH better in the production version. I am not a huge
fan of today's viper, but i must say, a "pre-owned" one can be an amazing
performance bargain. i just hope whatever audi decides to do in the future
goes "retro" back to the 1980s, not so much in style (I do like the audis of
the 80's), but rather in the driving experience. I own a herd of audis. A
1980 GT auto, 1984 4000sq, 1990 Cq, 1991 V8 5 speed and 2005.5 A4q 2.0 FSI 6
speed. In my immediate family, there is a 1991 200 20V IA III+, a TOTALLY
stock 1992 S4 and a 1990 200q 10vt. Of all of those cars, the older ones
are by far the most invigorating to drive. The Cq drive like a go-cart, but
I have done a ton of suspension work to it. The 4000 is a riot to drive as
it simply can't be stopped or broken. Again, a lot of mods there. But, for
pure driving pleasure, NOTHING tops my V8q. It is not as fast as my folks
20v 200, nor does it handle like the coupe. It is WAY more dysfunctional
then the 4000. But, OMG, with the 996 brakes, dual 2.5" exhaust,
H&R/Bilsteins, 18X8.5 245/40/18 wheels/tires, delrin subframe bushings, and
on and on and on, the car is truly a pleasure to drive. It does EVERYTHING
well. It is positively stellar at putting smile on my face. I love
compression braking up to a red light next to a US built sports car with a
V8. The V8 gets bewildered looks all the time. This is something the A4
2.0 can't even come close to doing. The A4 just fits in. It is nice to
drive, but just lacks that passion appeal that the older Audis have. I love
Audis. But, the other day I went to drive a 6.0 Pontiac GTO. In a strange
way, it kind of reminded me of my V8q...but with MUCH bigger balls. It was
raw, sounded AMAZING, handled okay, was comfortable, quick and considering
what u get, cheap. Oh, and another thing it shared with my V8q, It is not a
ticket magnet! Who knows, maybe GM wants to unload one for cheap.
