[V8] Transmission shifts hard

Was the fluid that was drained dirty?  Did you have the transmission fluid 'filter' changed?  One of my 1990 V8's, with about the same mileage, was noticeably shifting poorly with some degree of harshness relative to the other V8.  The fluid had probably not been changed for some time by the previous owner because it was noticeably dirty.  I repeatedly (3-4 times, I believe) drained off 4 quarts (replacing with new clean synthetic stuff) until the fluid was considerably cleaner--I didn't feel like draining the entire system in one go although in hind sight this would have been the more appropriate method to use.  That aside, the shifting improved but was still nowhere near as good as the other car.  I recently had the driveshaft replaced which meant dropping the exhaust system....therefore making it easy to remove the tranny oil pan and replace the filter which still had some sludge which surely wasn't helping matters.  With a new filter in place it now actually shifts
 better than the other V8.  The filter is a rather simple device....it might be better described as a very porous wire mesh grill....in my case it turned out to be more important than I had believed it would be....I now expect the transmission to last another 16 years or so.....

I have a 1993 V8 with 133,000 miles. The tranny is shifting real hard.  I had the fluid and seals changed.  It seemed to help a little, but the mechanic gives it about a year until it gives out entirely.  Does anyone have any suggestions or general prices that it would take to remedy the situation.
