[V8] AC compressor noise- help

 For the first time this year I turned on the AC and
it started to blow cold. After about 15 hwy miles the
air was no longer blowing cold. When I got home to
take a look I noticed the compressor making a bunch of
noise. To my knoledge the system is all original and
has never been     recharged or retrofitted. The noise
is bad enough for me to not want to drive the car
anywhere. Any Ideas on how to proceed on a self
diagnosis and fix?
