I guess I am of the same mindset as you Roger.  Although I disagree  with what's been on the market lately.  In the last year I've picked up the following from Ebay and the Audifans marketplace:
2 91 V8 5 spds with extensive service histories
1 immaculate 93 V8 4.2 with 105k with a few oil leaks but otherwise 100% no surprises
3 91 200q20v Avants with records dating back to day one.
Total spent under 16k.

I'd consider each one of them long term keepers.  I guess I need to start looking for a barn....
