I believe that that behavior is a typical mode of failure.  The 
sensor is OK when cold, buy loses tolerances and begins to 
fail when it gets hot (warm?).  It keeps degrading until it fails
completely.

If you don't want to spring for a new sensor to confirm it, you 
may be able to snag a used one for less from someone like
chris at force5auto.com.
