... the thing is ... you can find out exactly what the ECU thinks the engine temp is ... it is one of the 10 data entries in the "data block" ... VAG-COM or ProDiag will allow you to see these values ... even log them as you let the car warm up ... and drive it around.  The values are defined in the service manuals.
