... sorry to take a while to get back to you ... sometimes I don't get to 
check this account every day ...

You may want to try posting to the entire list ... I have almost no 
experience with the 4.2 models.  What you will want to do is to get a wiring 
diagram for your car ... or find someone who has one.  I don't know if the 
4.2s are like the pre-92 models ... where only cars destined for California 
had the check engine light hooked up.  Is the car you are working on listed 
as meeting California emissions requirements on the sticker under the hood? 
If so, the MIL light should be hooked up.  If you don't have the wiring 
diagram, you may be able to tell by looking in the Owner's Manual.  Most of 
the pre-92 V8s do not have the light hooked up ... you have to dig the 
connectors out of the wiring looms to make it work.

I would not try hacking in some other way of making the light work ... you 
can lay good money on the fact that Audi put the wires you need in the car 
... they just may not be connected.
