... so, did you actually confirm the hypothesis?

If it is a car you really would like to keep ... I saw
an ad on the 
Marketplace for a V8 5-speed conversion kit ...

 I can get you the ring gear fer you...cheap. 
& I have 5spd conversion parts as well. Tranny to the
pilot bearing adaptor..& everything inbetween.
