No, the viscous fan mounts to the passenger side timing belt cover and
the serpentine belt is driven by an add'l pulley on the end of the
crankshaft.  Removing the serpentine removes all driven accessories
from the noise equation.

Since when and by whom?  That's the first time I've heard that.
However, if true, then that's probably what it is because no, I didn't
replace the bearing, just the seal.  On both my V8's, come to think of
it.  Sweet.
