Actually, I did try that and I couldn't find springs that were small enough to 
fit, and the ones that I tried to cut down wouldn't sit correctly. Probably 
I'm just not doing it right.

One solution that worked for a while was to cut some dense packing foam into 
the correct shape and use that in place of the springs. But, for some reason 
they seem to lose their elasticity and stay collapsed after prolonged use. 
It's been almost a year since I replaced the old springs with foam ones and 
the buttons with the foam are not returning. I'll redo with more foam but I 
would like to replace them with the proper springs since they have a more 
positive feel and lasted longer than the foam solution.
