I did mine recently, and it was not that bad really.
I think I removed more parts than some/most people do - but in the end I think
it really saves time.
I removed:
- both distributors
- both ignition coils (for driver side just remove two bolts by hood switch)
- air filter box
- ignition wire routing/holding tray (under air box)
- fuel lines from passenger wheel well to motor
- remove both front tires
By doing this, I did not need any exotic tools anywhere. You do want to have a
lot of wobble tip socket extensions though. I was able to remove/install the
hydraulic connections the way the bently describes. My ratchet handle was
between the motor and wheel well - right where the fuel lines go - with enough
extensions with wobble tips to get the 17mm socket over to the union bolts. No
big deal at all, and you can use a torque wrench so you don't under/over tighten
these somewhat fragile bolts.
One other trick I used to remove the union bolts was to first remove the two
bolts securing the rack to the drivers wheel well, remove the steering shaft
coupler, and then loosly put the two bolts back from the back (rack) side so the
rack can swing away from the firewall but will not twist when you torque on the
union bolts. In effect, you have two "pins" that protrude from the rack end into
the bolt holes on the wheel well.
Remember to replace the steering damper too. Yours is likely to be toast and a
new one makes a big difference. Also - get the correct V8 part. There are other
parts that physically fit but they have a different calibration and don't work
as well.
