[V8] catalytic converter removal?

I ended up removing the cat from my '83 Ranger - not because I wanted to, but
because overzealous state inspectors running "sting" operations on muffler shops
taught them they could not install a used cat on a car - even if - as in my case
- I had bought it only a few weeks prior and still had the receipt. Not to get
too far into that story, but now I don't have a cat and the exhaust stinks.
I like to breath clean air, and the cats help in this regard. I seriously doubt
that in a non-racing situation you will be able to tell the difference so why
not just leave them on? Even if you pick up 4HP, is it worth the extra
pollution?
The 3.6L V8 is designed to not need a air pump or EGR valve so you can bet the
emission system relies on a specific back pressure range and the cats are part
of the design.
