I recently (finally) found time to install the factory CD in my '91,
courtesy of Ron Wainwright. Ran the harness through the right wireway and
crossed into the channel under the passenger seat to the transmission
tunnel-- lots of slack. Besides being pleasantly surprised that 1) the
speakers sound completely different w/ the CD, and 2) they even seem to
sound a little better w/ FM on the new head unit vs. the old Delta--- (drum
roll)--- the AM radio works!
I always thought the problem was the cable between the rear antenna amp and
the head unit, since the amp tested out ok, and when I put a long wire in
the rear antenna input the AM did work on the Delta. Now I wonder if the
problem was in the radio itself. It's either that or the "new" Gamma has
tremendously greater sensitivity.
Downside of the new CD is that the matrix display doesn't quite understand
the input-- when CD #4 is playing track 10, the dash display reads 100.4 FM
1-1. This is not a big deal considering the huge improvement in sound and
the ability to play something other than cassettes, but... Where is the
brain for the matrix display? Can you transplant just that part of a '93
cluster into a '91?
Dave
