[V8] 5 speed with too much power!

Well, this is a new one! The patient is a ’91 5 Speed and in the past 2
weeks or so there has been a VERY noticeable surge in power in 1st gear.
Most notably when I have been idling for a while (like a traffic light) or
after a long section of decel without any throttle application (coasting
down a hill). So, you take off from a light or get back on the gas after
coming down a hill, the thing erupts like NEVER before! The even stranger
part is that it’s accompanied by a new intake noise that sounds like I have
some cheesy Pep Boys “Cold Air Intake” on the thing (for the record, I
don’t). It is quite amusing when it happens and I am not complaining about
it, but it would be nice to know WHY it’s happening. It feels like the car
is getting a BUNCH of ignition timing, but I do not hear any pinging at any
point in time.

So, shift to second (or third or forth, etc
) and the intake noise is gone
and the power seems back to normal. I have done NOTHING to this car in the
past 3 months. The battery hasn’t died, I am not getting a check engine
light nor am I pulling any codes. It doesn’t seem to matter if the car is
hot or cold either. It was like a switch; one day it was normal, the next
day I have a fire breather on my hands (in first gear anyway).

Anyone ever heard of this or experienced this before? My guess is that the
Audi gods have decided to drop a bomb on me and they want to make sure that
I REALLY like the car before they do it

but I could be wrong.

Ben
