Kent: Since I have done that my recommendation is to do what I did, and
that is get in and drive it. Try the old "seat of the pants" checkride
before you do anything else.

Now, in my case I flew to Washington, DC, got in the car in the basement of
one of the plethora of DC Congressional office buildings and headed north.
The PO claimed that the timing belt was new...or at least not old...and the
car was registered for Virginia with current inspections in place.

Well, what the hell: it is all an adventure, right?

The very first thing that I noticed was that the brakes had considerable
pulse. Now, one of the main reasons for buying THAT car, was that it had
UFO's and just once in my lifetime, I felt it important to experience the
feared UFO brakes. WOW! What a jolt! "Ohhhhhhhhh noooooooooo," I thought.
"These won't work at ALL." Well, about thirty miles into the trip, the
brakes were almost normal. The PO did say that the car had been sitting
mostly and not being driven since he decided to sell it. Rust, I guess.

Other than that, I drove back to Maine uneventfully.

Once here, the car sat in my yard for about two weeks before I could do much
with it. I started it up and drove it a bit, and not long afterward as it
got colder into October, the first "tell tale" appeared: a wild howling
from somewhere in the center of the car. "Aha! I thought: the feared
driveshaft center bearing!"

It went to the wrench's not long thereafter, where it sat while it got
"reconstituted".

The rest of the "Legend of the Black Mariah" has already been told.

So, my advise is to try it and then feel what is wrong. It is probably
better than the previous owner thought. Tough birds these girls!

By the way, how many miles on this lady?

Roger

And you won't be tempting the Audigods by calling her something sweet and
lovely....like Katrina! You could even get a vanity plate with that many
letters! (That will count BIG TIME in Audiheaven!)
