[V8] 20V Avant rear shocks

Stupid question. Especially since I already have a set of Bentley manuals,
but I'll ask anyway.

My rear shocks need replacing on The Black Mariah. I have been looking at
the rear suspension from time to time, and thinking about installing new
shocks myself. It has been a long time since I did any wrenching under a
car, but I have a huge open bay garage (if I ever clean out all the clutter,
and I WILL clean out all the clutter!), and I also have jack stands and an a
lot of assorted tools that I accumulated years ago when I was more willing
the crawl under cars for various purposes.

Anyway, I doubt that the actual changing process for the rear shocks is
exactly rocket science, although I am aware that once done, the car will
have to visit the wrench for a four wheel alignment. No big deal, since I
will be mounting new tires this summer anyway.

Soooo, the question: does the job require a spring compressor to do? It
looks to me like the rear springs have to be compressed in order to loosen
and remove the rear shocks, is that correct?

I am also thinking that "while I am there", I will replace the upper mounts,
also.

I have also decided that I am going to investigate the underside of the dash
panel to see how the abs light is wired....how the air bag light is
wired...and to see if I really NEED those lights to work....mostly curious
right now, doncha know?
