... I think Ingo's looking in the right direction ... the vacuum that
controls the flaps and valves is completely separate from the refrigerant
compressor. Even with the compressor momentarily disengaged the system will
continue to cool the car. The mode as viewed from the inside of the car
should not change just because the engine's at WOT.
I would think that another test that could be done is to try cycling the
system between modes when the engine isn't running. If there's a bad check
valve then the reservoir will be depleted and it will not be possible to
move the recirc flap or any of the air routing doors ...

Ingo.. not 100% but the TPS will cut off the compressor under WOT.. and
that will affect the recirculate mode (CC Head see the compressor as
"off", so stop the last mode and return to normal.
You can test this out in the driveway.. car running; ac on and in
recirculate.. pull the connector at the compressor to turn it off, it
should switch modes.
