I too have had the dreaded dual sealing gasket issue once......what a mess,
but when you own an old Audi I think you always must have enough oil dry or
kitty litter to sop up at least 5-10 qrts of oil......In Fact I think it states
that in the owners manual! What with Pentosin, flushing fluids, ect.
I also had a stuck filter on my first V8- and two gaskets to boot!
No leak though, but it took me close to four hours with tin snips,
needle-nose vise grips, and a dremal to get it off.
First the filter wrench completely roached the filter body into a crumpled
mess which came off in one inch strips. When I got to the base- I cut it off
with the dremal- not fun. Especially when you look up into the minimal space
you actually have way up in there.
But, I was NOT going to let the car beat me!
That night I was meeting my SCCA buddies for some Karting, and my shoulders,
back, neck where completely useless to try to steer the kart (which if you
ever have driven an "real kart" not a amusement park one you would know how
physical they really are!) much to the joy of my friends who didn't let me
whine too much when I explained my lack of pace due to the four hours of Audi
"therapy" !!

There is a follow up to this procedure (besides several beers) ;)
About 36 hours after this procedure, your starter will fail, which will
require removing the re-installed oil filter which will now be hopelessly locked
into place by some unseen force - preventing spillage, but requiring an
extension to remove, and enough torque to make that nice inexpensive Mahle filter
will be garbage.
Been there, screamed bloody murder about that!
