... I guess I'm in a devil may care mood today ... :-)

That is an interesting and important data point Bill.  It is true that the airflow from the motion of the car will tend to blow the oil back, but it is a little tough to get enough there to cause smoke.  I'm thinking that the smoke may indicate that the source of the leak is higher and farther back in the car ... steering rack?  Upper rack line?  Return line?
