Nope, it doesn't really try to start. Probably because only two or three cylinders are able to fire the fuel. I know I can do a leakdown, but what I'm looking for more than anything else is answers as to what could have happened so suddenly?
As for the leakdown, I'll probably junk the car or replace the engine (doubtful) before trying to fix this one.

Were you able to get it running? I'd be thinking about getting the lifters pumped up before I paid much attention to the compression. If you want to get an assessment of the cylinder an valve condition, do a leakdown test - these can be done with the engine not running (and not even fully assembled)
