Replating plastic, if it's the process I'm familiar with, is called "Vacuum
metalizing". It's commonly used on interior pieces like A/C vent balls and
the old '60 arm rests. You'll find vendors in Hemmings.

BTW, I just had a new windshield put in the V8. The glass warehouse had a
heck of a time finding a non-Chinese windshield (they are so wavy my installer
refuses to put them in). The warehouse finally came up with a Pilkington
(usta be LOF) unit that was one of three listed for the Audi 5k, this version
with a V8 Quattro sub application. It fits perfectly and had all the right
radio stuff. The only problem? The lower mask (the black part that hides the
bottom of the dash) is much shorter than the original mask and there are a
half-a-dozen fasteners and large holes now visible through the glass. Bummer.
The oddest part is that the original glass cracked out of the blue while
parked in storage. There was no damage that caused the glass to run. I'd
suggest that if you need a windshield, try and get one with the correct mask or
tape over the holes on the dash before the glass goes in.
